CommentsThe team of analysts for the UFC on Fox Sports 1 and Fox broadcasts has been providing the most in-depth coverage that mixed martial arts has seen in its 20 years of existence. With a collection of seasoned fight veterans and a handful of well-versed hosts at the helm, the people working the pre- and post-fight shows for the UFC have consistently raised the bar. Brian Stann may have retired from fighting just north of a year ago, but that hasn't slowed "The All-American" down in the slightest. The decorated war hero has traded his fight shorts for a suit and tie and swapped time inside the Octagon for a role behind the analyst desk—and occasionally the commentator booth—for the UFC on Fox Sports 1 broadcasts. Nevertheless, the former WEC light heavyweight champion is still delivering knockout performances on the regular as he's become a bright star in his new realm. While those duties make for a packed schedule, he always takes time to drop by this column and prove how much more well-versed he is in the fight game than yours truly. In his last appearance, he went head-to-head with Jon Anik, but on this go-around he flew solo to tackle what is the most stacked card to ever hit a UFC on Fox event as the Octagon rolls through Orlando for UFC on Fox 11 this Saturday. While that might be a tough pull for some, this is Brian Stann we are talking about, folks, and there hasn't been a day of his life that he's turned down going toe-to-toe with a monster. This is what he had to say about the upcoming card for UFC on Fox 11. USA TODAY Sports It's always nice to have you in the mix for "Dropping Knowledge," Mr. Stann, but we'll save the niceties for later. We are here to talk the hurt game, and the best place to start will be with the big boys in the main event. Travis Browne and Fabricio Werdum will step into the cage on Saturday night to determine who will be the next man to face Cain Velasquez for the heavyweight title. Brian Stann: It's definitely an interesting matchup, and let's start with Travis Browne. He has phenomenal footwork for a man his size, and it's only improving because he's recently made a real commitment to his nutrition. He is much leaner than he used to be and certainly so coming into his last fight. I think that is really key for him. There is no secret about Werdum wanting to take this fight to the ground because that is where he is the strongest. If Browne uses his footwork and his reach advantage, that should keep Werdum at bay and lead to him winning this fight. For Werdum, on the other hand, anytime you have to close distance to neutralize reach, it is a complicated proposition. It is really tough to do unless you are one of those elite-level wrestlers like a Cain Velasquez. They can shoot in and use chain wrestling to get you to the mat. For Werdum, he has to use a lot of movement and feints. He has to cut Browne off and may have to try and withstand the damage he may endure to get inside on Travis Browne. He also has to use his strikes to set up his takedowns. There have been times in his career where Werdum wasn't able to get the takedown, and he tried to pull guard like in the fight with Alistair Overeem. That is not going to work here. He has to mix in his takedowns with his improved striking to get Browne on the mat, or he can try to smother him up against the cage and make it an uglier fight. He just can't give Browne a lot of space because that is where he really excels. That is where he knocks guys out with superman punches, front kicks and all kinds of crazy stuff. That said, you have to be careful when you put him against the cage after what he did to Gabriel Gonzaga and Josh Barnett, but I honestly don't think Fabricio is going to make that same mistake and keep his head there for multiple elbows to get dropped on. Another interesting angle heading into this heavyweight showdown is Werdum's path through the UFC. He came in and picked up solid momentum by defeating Roy Nelson and Mike Russow, but then decided to take an extended layoff to coach The Ultimate Fighter in Brazil. Following his win over Antonio "Minotauro" Nogueira, he sat on the sidelines for another long stretch, waiting for a title shot to materialize. All the while he was on the sidelines, Browne was staying busy and wrecking shop in the heavyweight ranks. It plays a big factor. Every time you talk to a fighter who has been on a long layoff, the term "ring rust" is going to come up. Of course they are going to say it's not going to be a factor. They can't have that in their mind and be worried about it, even though it is always in the back of our heads. But it matters. There is a rhythm to fighting. Especially in terms of the mental aspect of fighting. If you don't get into a rhythm, you get into trouble. You have to find a rhythm to the entire approach. When you do a training camp, cut weight, do the media rounds and make that walk to the cage, you get into a zone. You get accustomed to doing it, and the biggest challenge becomes performing inside the Octagon the same way you perform inside the gym. For Werdum, it's almost going to feel unfamiliar because he's been out so long. He's only fought four times in the last three years, and that isn't a lot. It plays a tremendous role in this fight. Travis Browne has been on a roll, in a rhythm and he's getting better. And let's face it...when you don't have a fight coming up, it's hard to go in the gym and get better in order to add to your skill set when you don't have anything on the books. Browne's been fighting top-notch guys and has been constantly improving with each camp. Werdum has had the other route where it makes you wonder. How motivated is he? When you have nothing to chase and work toward, that can make you stagnate as a fighter. The crazy thing about the heavyweight division—at least in my opinion—is how the title picture in the heavyweight division has shaped up. Less than two years ago I wouldn't have given either guy much of a chance of beating Cain Velasquez, but both have had some interesting moments where it has made me wonder about those matchups. I certainly think there have been huge steps taken in that regard. When Fabricio Werdum fought and beat Roy Nelson, he had some serious momentum. That was some of the best-looking work of his career. He looked better than ever that night. But the entire problem with this scenario is that both of these guys will be fighting for a chance to face the champion, and I think people sometimes forget exactly what that champion did to Junior dos Santos not once but twice. After those fights, I don't know how many guys really want to get in there with Velasquez. To be quite honest, I don't know how much either one of these guys has to offer Cain Velasquez. He is one of the best heavyweight champions in the history of the UFC. He doesn't have the title defenses racked up to prove that yet, but when you go skill set for skill set and look at the performances he's put on inside the Octagon, you can definitely make that argument. When you look at Travis Browne, he definitely has heart and durability. He also one-punch, -knee, -kick or -elbow power that can put your lights out, and he showed that against Josh Barnett in an awkward position. That is really what makes him an interesting pairing for Velasquez. If he wins this fight and gets the title shot, he can get taken down and maybe have the power to throw an elbow off his back to wobble his opponent and set something up or put their lights out. He has that kind of power. On paper, a lot of people wouldn't think Werdum has much at all to offer Cain Velasquez. But then again we said the same thing about his fight with Fedor Emelianenko and the rest is history. You can never count anyone out in this sport, but in any heavyweight title fight—at least in the next 24 months—my money is going on Cain Velasquez. There is a big fight in the women's bantamweight division on this card between Miesha Tate and Liz Carmouche. Both women have fought for the title and have been turned back, but have proved to be in the upper tier at 135 pounds in the process. Due to the division being so new, a lot of the focus is constantly put on finding potential title contenders for Ronda Rousey, but if you take that out of the equation, this is still a great fight. I love this fight. I think both of them having the experience of fighting for the title has brought their games along at a quick pace. They've learned how to promote themselves and make people interested in watching them fight. Whether it is on social media or in their interviews, they are getting people's attention. Miesha, on the fighting side, is a fighter who takes a lot of risks in there. And that is a double-edged sword. One, it puts you at risk when you are in the Octagon, but on the other side, it certainly gets you a lot of fans and makes people want to watch you fight. Miesha's striking has improved, but I think she's made the biggest strides in her wrestling and scrambling abilities. Several times in the rematch with Rousey, she was able to scramble out of a bad position and get into top position. She was able to shoot in for a nice takedown and actually took Ronda down once. And Ronda is no slouch. You could match her skill set up with any fighter on the planet. She really is that good. As for Liz, she has shown dominance in really one or two areas. She has found success working in the clinch and getting top position and maintaining it. She is very strong. She is a physical specimen for a female. She lives a Spartan discipline where she cooks all her meals and eats strictly for performance. She is dedicated to her career, but the question hovering around her is whether or not she is going to be able to pull the trigger. In her fight against Alexis Davis it looked like she got caught up in the moment of being a veteran and fighting on a military base. She just didn't pull the trigger that night. I think Carmouche has to take advantage of the risks Miesha Tate takes inside the cage. Tate throws punches and sometimes overcommits to them, which will make it easier to land the takedown. She will scramble for a submission or really unleash with her ground-and-pound, and if Carmouche can keep her composure, there will be windows of opportunity that will open up for her. With Miesha, she is a little rough around the edges right now. I think part of that is because we are evaluating her in fights against Ronda Rousey. Let's not forget that Tate had some success in different aspects of those fights. But for this fight with Liz, I think Miesha needs to clean up her striking and work in her takedowns better. She needs to take less risks all the while still being exciting. She needs to stay out of the clinch, execute takedowns on her schedule when Liz is backing up, and she can win this fight. We talk about exciting matchups all the time in this column, and how some pairings—at least on paper—seem to be "no fail" when it comes to being an exciting fight. No...there is no way possible this thing doesn't turn into a barnburner. I spent years training with "Cowboy" and never had a sparring session with that maniac that wasn't a barnburner. In fact, I don't think I've ever gone to dinner with Cerrone, and it wasn't a barnburner. The way he's chosen to live his life is in complete and utter eyebrow-raising fashion. This is going to be an awesome fight. I remember Edson Barboza's last fight against Danny Castillo, and the leg kicks he was hitting him with were hurting me. I think he knocked out one of my wisdom teeth with one of them as a matter of fact, and I was a good couple of hundred yards away from the cage. This is going to be incredible. Rarely do we see Donald Cerrone in matchups where it may not behoove him to strike. He's so tall for that division and such a dynamic striker where we expect him to have the advantage in that department in most fights. With a guy like Barboza, it is not a great proposition to spend a lot of time with him on the feet. However, we did see Danny Castillo make him dance and do so significantly several times in their fight with some good crisp boxing. One thing I think is an X-factor in this fight is Cerrone's wrestling. He's been working that skill set for a long time now, and he truly has some explosive takedowns in his arsenal if he chooses to use them. I think we are going to see them in this fight, and the big question is going to be if Barboza can finish this thing or debilitate Cerrone's legs so much early on that it takes away his ability to use those explosive shots. A few well-timed takedowns from Cerrone can win Cowboy this fight unless Barboza has a magic guard that I'm not aware of. Cerrone is very difficult to sweep and submit. With your history as a fighter and the time you've spent with Cerrone, you may be able to answer this next question better than anyone else on the planet. At a recent media day in Albuquerque, N.M., Cerrone said he hasn't watched a lick of tape on Barboza save for seeing his highlight-reel knockout of Terry Etim with the spinning heel kick. I know Cerrone has a "fly by night" lifestyle, but it's hard to believe even someone as rough and tumble as Cowboy hasn't watched tape on a guy he's about to fight. There is a definitely a game plan for him going into this fight. That said, this is Cerrone saying that, and I truly believe him. I believe he hasn't watched a single fight that Barboza has been in. But what I also know is that all of his trainers, training partners and coaches have all watched it for him and have been in his ear throughout his entire camp. I spoke to one of his wrestling coaches just the other day, and I know for a fact they have a game plan in place going into this fight. It's never usually a sophisticated one with Cowboy, and at any moment he may throw it out the window if he feels like brawling with Barboza. But I do know there is a game plan in place, and there are people around him that have studied Edson Barboza. Another important fight on the card that is flying somewhat under the radar is a middleweight clash between Brad Tavares and Yoel Romero. Both of these guys have some solid momentum and are right outside the Top 10. Tavares is on a five-fight winning streak, but he has been criticized a bit for his fighting style. He is certainly an efficient striker who throws volume, but he doesn't have a lot of finishes on his record. Romero is a fighter who is going to come at him. I certainly think that's the case. I know for a fact that because of Romero's age, if he wins this fight he will be facing a top guy in his next one. I remember having a conversation with Joe Silva about that very topic. Romero isn't a young man, and he doesn't want to sit on the fence very much. He wants to get into those big-time fights, and he's out there finishing people. When paired with his resume and wrestling credentials, that is certainly impressive. Tavares does get nitpicked a little bit, and sometimes we just don't allow fighters to develop. Brad is a young guy, even for all the fights he has under his belt. He gets better and better each time out, but it takes two to dance. You need two guys to make a really aggressive fight, and I think Romero's style is going to bring out a more aggressive Tavares. I think too often Brad's opponents have allowed him to get into a rhythm, dictate the pace and spacing of the fight. He's a combination fighter, and unless you disrupt that rhythm, you aren't going to get any spontaneous action from him. Romero is a guy who will do that. He's going to push Tavares backward and could force Tavares to do some things that maybe we haven't seen from him yet. That makes for a very interesting fight. If Tavares can get past Romero, that makes a pretty big statement. He's been vying for Top 10 guys for a while now, and I think he deserves those fights. I don't care how you win five consecutive fights in the UFC, that is a significant accomplishment. The big question for me in this fight is Romero's fight IQ. Can he go in there and fight a complete fight in intelligent fashion? We've seen him rocked and saw him get taken down many times by Derek Brunson, who is a great athlete but certainly doesn't have the wrestling chops that Romero does. That fight showcased the difference between competitive wrestling and MMA wrestling and definitely left some interesting questions on the table regarding Romero's ability to compete with top competition. He was able to come back and finish Brunson in that fight, but the top guys aren't going to give him those opportunities. It is going to be interesting to see how he progresses. The lightweight division has been one of the most competitive collectives under the UFC banner for the past four years, but it has hit somewhat of a rough patch recently. Champion Anthony Pettis has been out with injury, and his next fight with Gilbert Melendez won't take place until the end of the year. The fight between Rafael dos Anjos and Khabib Nurmagomedov is a crucial fight in the title picture, but it's on the lower side of the name-recognition scale. I think they can, but things are kind of up in the air at 155 pounds right now. Title shots are a tricky thing because they aren't necessarily earned by winning fights in workman-type fashion—they are about winning fights and establishing hype and buzz. They are about getting people excited to watch you fight and creating a demand. That's part of being a fighter. You have to create a demand for your services if you really want to have a successful run at this. Nurmagomedov is a fighter that not too many people want to fight. I had the opportunity to speak with Gilbert Melendez recently, and Gil was breaking down Khabib's style and telling me this guy is a tough matchup for any of the top-echelon fighters in the division. I certainly take Gilbert's word when it comes to that because he is certainly one of those top lightweights. If one of these two guys can go out there and finish the other, they definitely put themselves up for a fight with title implications. The way things are shaping up, I imagine the winner of this fight would face the winner of the upcoming bout between Benson Henderson and Rustam Khabilov later this year. That would make the most sense. Nurmagomedov has been a real puzzle for guys to figure out, and if he can go out there and have a dominant performance against Rafael dos Anjos, that would certainly put him in the hunt for the title. The same applies for Dos Anjos. If he goes out there and beats the guy no one wants to fight right now, he definitely deserves to be up there in the title picture. Let's finish things up talking about the return of Thiago Alves. "The Pitbull" has had some of the worst luck of any fighter in recent memory as he's battled through a series of injuries that have put him on the sidelines for the better part of two years. The fight game is a rough business, and injury is certainly something you guys have to deal with. Let's start with the first part of the question and talk about what is going on in Thiago's head. There has to be a tremendous amount going on in there. When you sit out that long in the fight game, not only are you putting yourself in financial jeopardy at that moment, but you are also thinking about the money you lost that you should be stacking away for the future. I think there are probably a lot of things outside of the actual fight that are stressing out Thiago Alves. All the injuries, miles he's put on his body and all the money it has cost him being sidelined; all of those things have to be weighing on his mind. I think dealing with those things and going out there and putting on a solid performance are the biggest hurdles he's facing. With GSP out of the picture and with what Robbie Lawler has recently done at welterweight, it showcases that guys like Thiago Alves can certainly get themselves back in the mix. Alves' deficiencies were never of the athletic variety. Sometimes, guys hit a ceiling and reach a point where they are never going to get any better. Then you get the guys like Jon Jones where the sky is the limit. I think Alves can certainly improve and get himself back there, but the bigger question is can he keep himself healthy anymore, and a lot of that has to do with what goes on inside the gym and not so much inside the Octagon. Gardner Co. BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) Familiar artwork could soon be moved out of a popular downtown spot. If Gardner Company moves forward with plans to build its City Center Plaza, three pieces of art in the Grove Plaza will be removed to make way for construction crews and equipment. One piece, "Historic Sight: Boise Chinatown," will be stored away and then put back in its original spot. A second piece, "Keepsies," will be moved to Fort Boise temporarily. However, both pieces of art will be put back after construction wraps up. A third piece of art, "Heliotrope" will have to find a permanent new home. Many say Boise's beauty rests in the trees and scenic landscape, but others argue that artwork has become more prominent in the cityscape. "When I first saw Boise I was really into it, I loved that it was really vibrant and that there was a lot of good art and color," Boise resident Amanda Stone said. "That was definitely an attraction when I got here, it's really amazing. City of Boise Public Arts Manager Karen Bubb said she's encouraged by the rise of art in downtown Boise. "It's really great," Bubb said. "I see people becoming more connected to their community through the art and learning about the stories of Boise through the art. However, three of these pieces will be removed if Gardner Company builds its City Center Plaza. "Heliotrope," which stands 16 feet tall, will have to be removed and relocated somewhere along 8th Street. "We will hire the artist and a team of people to literally unearth the sculpture...transport it by crane, create new footings and re-install it at a new site," Bubb said. Compare it to moving furniture, but most told KBOI this art movement is just part of a constantly evolving cityscape. "I think it's natural to have to move things like that," Boise resident Wade Darrell said. "The new stuff they just put up so might as well put it anywhere. KRGV. Updated: Apr 18, 2014 5:26 PMEDINBURG - The new sheriff in Hidalgo County said his department needs to change how it documents deputies' work time. In a trial last year, some deputies claimed to have manipulated the system in the past to earn comp time. They testified they used that comp time to campaign for former sheriff Lupe Trevino. Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies are still using pen and paper to fill out their time sheets, even though the county switched to an electronic time-keeping system five years ago. Hidalgo County Treasurer Norma Garcia said electronic timecards are more accurate and reliable. She told CHANNEL 5 NEWS while the electronic time card system started in 2009, Trevino refused to implement it for his 800 employees. The sheriff's office is the county's largest department. The county treasurer said she tried to convince the former sheriff to ditch the pen and paper approach. According to Garcia, he refused because his deputies worked odd hours and shifts. Testimony from a federal corruption trial last year involving former sheriff's deputies paints a different picture. Two deputies testified they tampered with their time cards to earn extra comp time. Former deputy Fabian Rodriguez told prosectors, "We would alter the comp time sheets to say that we stayed late and what not. Rodriguez claimed former sheriff's commander Jose Padilla then ordered deputies to use that fake comp time to campaign for Trevino. The then-sheriff denied those claims. He said, "I have no idea what you're talking about. Trevino resigned last month and pleaded guilty to money laundering charges this week. The county's new sheriff, Eddie Guerra, told CHANNEL 5 NEWS he understands the concerns about the time-tracking system and changes will be made. The county treasurer confirms her staff has been talking to the sheriff's staff. Guerra said administrators will use the electronic system. He told us they're trying to figure out the best way for deputies to clock in and out. KRGV. Although the success of track and field athletes often boils down to individual goals, team pride is still a big factor. That is what made Thursday a little more special for the Horn girls and North Mesquite boys track and field teams as they captured championships at the 11-5A/12-5A area meet at Williams Stadium. The Jaguars won seven individual events and a pair of relays as they ran away with the girls team title. Horn's total of 154.5 points was nearly double that of runner-up Tyler Lee (81). It was a much different story on the boys side, where Mesquite, Longview, Sachse, North Mesquite and Lakeview were separated by just eight points going into the final event of the night--the 4x400 relay. The Lobos and Patriots did not have a team in the event, but the other three schools did. The Stallions trailed the Skeeters by seven points, but were able to finish second to Horn and earn 16 points. Mesquite was unable to keep pace, earning just two points with a sixth-place finish as North Mesquite (75) was able to pull ahead of the Skeeters (68), Mustangs (66) and Lobos (64) for the team championship. The top four finishers in each event qualify for the Class 5A Region II meet, which will take place on Apr. 25-26 at the Hart-Patterson Track Complex in Waco. Girls 3,200 Meters: Tyler Lee's Mary Neal (11:27.13) held off North Mesquite's Alyssa Herrera (11.35.01) to win the event. Rowlett's Maddie Shubert took third to earn a regional qualifying berth. Boys 3,200 Meters: Mesquite's Eric Villagrana (10:02.36) outpaced the field for a 25-second victory. Skeeter teammate Joaquin Tinoco took third. Girls 4x100 relay: Horn entered the event with the fifth-fastest time in the state. While the Jaguars did not meet that mark, finishing in a time of 46,70 seconds, they did do the job, with Daysha Bullocks and Deja Young pulling away on the final two legs to pass up Garland and Longview. Boys 4x100 relay: Longview (41.69) anchor Travon Howard was able to withstand a late charge by Devin Duvernay and Sachse (41.96) and Larron Sims and Mesquite (42.11). Girls 800: Favorite Kodii Church trailed Lakeview's Destanie Thomas by 20 meters going into the second lap but tracked her down in the final 300 meters to win by less than a second, posting a time of 2:17.12. Sachse's Agong Tac placed fourth. Boys 800: A tightly-packed race until the final 150 meters, North Garland's Ethan Woods (2:03.23) was able to hold off Horn's Micah Kennedy (2:03.83) at the finish line. Girls 100 Hurdles: Garland's Johna Diggs (14.38) got off to a great start and made it stand up until the end to finish ahead of Bre Patton of Tyler Lee (14.65). Mesquite's Kourtni Russell made a late surge to finish fourth. Boys 110 Hurdles: Rowlett's Hayden Rose (15.30) led a 11-5A sweep of the top four spots. Girls 100: Horn's Kaylor Harris (12.01) got off to a strong start that allowed her to hold off a surge by Tyler Lee's Brittany Browning. Breain Lewis of North Mesquite (12.14) was third. Boys 100: In one of the tightest races of the night, Longview's Jamycal Hasty (10.73) nosed ahead of Sachse's Devin Duvernay (10.74) in a photo finish. Girls 4x200: Longview (1:40.95) was in control from start to finish to earn the win. Horn (1:41.53) trailed by a large margin early but made up ground on the third and fourth legs with Kaylor Harris and Deja Young. North Mesquite edged Rowlett to earn the final qualifying berth in fourth. Boys 4x200: Longview (1:27.99) grabbed the lead on the opening leg and held off Mesquite (1:28.48) by a half-second. Sachse took third place with Rowlett in fourth. Girls 400: Horn's Kodii Church (57.37) took the early lead and put it in cruise control on her way to her second individual gold medal of the evening. Jaguar teammate Daysha Bullocks finished third with Mesquite's Adia Vaughn in fourth. Boys 400: Entering the event with just the sixth-fastest qualifying time, Horn's Emmanuel Ogwo (49.40) pulled away in lane one to earn the win. 12-5A champion Lincoln Warren of Horn was third and North Mesquite's Andrew Jones took fourth. Girls 300 Hurdles: North Garland's Alexis Chapman (46.67) made a strong finishing kick to hold off a trio of MISD athletes in Schyler Dickerson-Kelly of Mesquite, Kourtni Russell of Mesquite and Lyric Choice of Horn. Boys 300 Hurdles: Mesquite's Christian Edmonds (40.52) took control during the final 150 meters to hold off Ethan Woods of North Garland. Girls 200: Deja Young of Horn (24.66) broke strong out of the curve and held on down the backstretch for a solid win over North Mesquite's Breain Lewis (25.29). Boys 200: After getting edged by .01 second in the 100, Sachse's Devin Duverany left no doubt, winning in a time of 21.80. Girls 1,600: North Mesquite's Alyssa Herrera stayed on the heels of Mary Neal of Tyler Lee for 1,400 meters before Neal pulled away late to win in a time of 5:14.86. Rowletts Jazmynn Kennebeck made a late kick to take fourth. Boys 1,600: Rockwall's Spencer McKee (4:38.29) edged teammate Justin Tokuz by .04 seconds to win the gold medal. Mesquite's Eric Villagrana and Rowlett's Mitchell Macinnis were third and fourth, respectively. Girls 4x400 Relay: Horn's first three legs of ShaDera Williams, Lyric Choice and Daysha Bullocks put the team in position and then handed to the individual 400 champion and Kodii Church did the rest to win in a time of 3:59.22. Mesquite's Taylor Barnett ran a strong final leg to catch Tyler Lee at the wire and grab fourth place. Boys 4x400 Relay: Horn's Emmanuel Ogwo used a big finish as the Jaguars (3:23.23) edged North Mesquite (3:23.30) by just .07 seconds. The Stallions' team of Caleb Cross, Jareion Sanders, Tavoris Smith and Andrew Jones did enough, though, to propel their team to the overall title. Girls Discus: Horn's Domonique Allen (134-02) dominated, winning by more than 21 feet over Lakeview's Janalia Jones. Boys Discus: Aaron Akens of North Mesquite continued to rule this event, winning with a throw of 173-11, 24 feet ahead of teammate Michael Nichols. Horn's Dalen Morgan edged Mesquite's Christian Castleberry for fourth. Girls High Jump: Tyler Lee's ShawNae Muhammad was the lone jumper to clear 5-4 to take first place. Mesquite's Abigail Derosier was third. Boys High Jump: South Garland's Billy Gilmore cleared 6-4 to lead a 11-5A sweep of the top four spots. Girls Long Jump: Rockwall's Kaylee Hinton (18-04.50) did just enough to edge out Horn's Zuliat Alli (18-01.50). Boys Long Jump: Tyler Lee's Bryce Wilkerson (22-07.00) edged out South Garland's Deon Johnson on a tiebreaker. Sachse's Devin Duvernay jumped 21-11-00 to take fourth. Girls Pole Vault: Rockwall's Kaylee Hinton earned her second field event gold medal by clearing 11-00. Rowlett's Jasmyn Penn held off Delaney Runnels of Sachse for fourth. Boys Pole Vault: Rockwall teammates Garrett Dennard and Clark Norris tied for first place clearing 12 feet. Sachse's Robert Calkins and Rowlett's Ben Breeden nabbed the other two regional spots. Girls Shot Put: Although closer than the discus, Horn's Domonique Allen (36-00.00) held off teammate Latavia Williams (35-09.50) for her second gold. Boys Shot Put: North Mesquite's Michael Nichols continued his dominance in the event with a winning throw of 53-08.50. That was enough to hold off Malcolm Jackson of Rowlett and Aaron Akens of North Mesquite. Girls Triple Jump: One-half of an inch was the difference between North Mesquite's Tyree Brown (37-02.50) and Garland's Krystal Ejesieme (37-02.00). Kaylor Harris of Horn (36-03.00) was third. Boys Triple Jump: Lakeview's Alvin Chikaeze (46-07.25) topped North Mesquite's Tavoris Smith (45-08.75) for the event title. Andrea writes about psychology, creativity, and business over on the Crew blog. It’s 10:00 at night and I’m still thinking about work. Thinking about what I should change in an article, or what I should have done in previous articles. My husband and I are sitting in the same room together, but I’m not really there. I’m half-a-mile away and it’s been like this for months. I’ve done this with every job. I can’t leave work at work—I’ve never known how. I love working hard—to feel my brain pulse with energy as I try to absorb as much information as humanly possible in a day. I thought this made me better, that it made me different, but that’s not true at all. You can feel fulfilled both at work and at home without sacrificing one or the other. Your work is never far away, it’s on your phone or computer—it’s reached a level of near omnipresence. What if I need to be reached but I don’t have my phone, and then people think I don’t want to be reached, and then they will assume I don’t want to work, and then I will get fired. I don’t want to get fired therefore I must respond. If I unpack that even a little, tiny bit, I can begin to see the flaws in that logic. No. Contrary to our incessant desire to always respond to e-mails and be ‘present’ 24/7, employers know this isn’t good for us. Hell, it’s not good for anyone. Google is conducting a decade’s long study into the work lives of its employees in an effort to understand how people work better. What they discovered is that only 31% of their employees are able to leave work at work. That means 69% of people take their work home with them. It’s actually more than that though, people are unable to distinguish between their work life and personal life. Google’s Dublin office instituted a policy called “Google Goes Dark.” All of the employees in that office had to leave their work devices at work and off. This was done in an effort to draw clear boundaries between home life and work life. There’s a perception that more work equals more productivity, but that’s not always the case. So you never take a sick day, or a vacation, and you are always ‘on-call.’ You also put in about 70 hours a week, so that will pay off eventually I’m sure…oh wait, except it doesn’t. The Economist looked at the data from OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries found that the more productive workers were actually those that spent less time in the office. Lifehacker takes it one stop further and puts an actual number on how many hours we work before we begin to see diminished results (hint: it’s about 30 hours). Americans in particular rarely use their vacation, the average employee has about 9.2 days of unused vacation time. That’s up from 6.2 days in 2011. The average person in the OECD works 1,776 hours a year and devotes 62% of the day, or close to 15 hours, to personal care (eating, sleeping, etc.) and leisure (socializing with friends and family, hobbies, games, computer and television use, etc. If you subtract the 8 hours you are supposed to be sleeping each night, that leaves you with about 7 hours of time between leisure and eating. Now add in your unpaid work, like cleaning, and your commute and yeah, you see where I’m going with this. Your body needs time to regenerate. I swear on the life of my cat you need those hours each and every day to process, recoup, and reorganize. “(…) During the day we move from a state of alertness progressively into physiological fatigue approximately every 90 minutes. We trick ourselves into avoiding this fatigue through coffee or just plain old ignoring what our bodies are telling us. You can’t fake out your body. Fatigue will catch up with you and when it does your work and personal life suffers. When you think you are tricking your body you are actually only increasing the likelihood that you will suffer from burnout. Those we are around the most cannot help but be impacted by our emotional and physical states—this is also known as crossover. What researchers have found is that you can negatively impact your family life by bringing work up with you. The upshot of this is that your family life can positively effect you work life…if you let it. Family time and time spent with loved ones re-energizes us (usually). When you come home from work committed to actually spending time with your family you will provide your partner and loved with more resources. This makes them feel great, but in return it also ends up giving you more energy which positively effects your work. You owe this happy, wonderful feeling to oxytocin (aka “the hug hormone”/“love drug” and various other affectionate terms). For a multitude of reasons (fear of losing our job, fear of being seen as lazy) many of us don’t take advantage of the benefits offered to us. Making some use of these benefits can make you feel more energized at work and at home. Remember that it is okay to ask for help, we all will need it at some point or another. Making use out of what benefits your employers offer can enable you to devote more energy to your home life. Okay, great, leave work at work. When you bring work home chances are that you are thinking about that e-mail you didn’t send or everything you have to do tomorrow, and the rest of the week. Before you leave work, clean up your desk. A clutter free desk (inbox, computer etc.) helps to clear your mind. Physical clutter competes for your attention and because the brain has limited attentional resources, this competition can reduce and damage your productivity. I clean up about a half-hour before I am done with work. The process of putting things away (physically or digitally) helps me mentally sort through my day. Organizing my desk helps me organize my mind. I work from home, so this is even more important for me. If I don’t clean up my work area, I am physically incapable of leaving work. Another great way to begin winding down your workday is to make your to-do list for the next day. This will make sure that you start the next day with a plan and goals in mind—which means you’ll spend less time thinking about everything you have to do and more time actually doing it. It’s so easy to get bogged down in everything you have to do that you forget everything you have already done. What good is working if you never take pride in those accomplishments that you put so much time and effort in? Before you end each day reassess your to-do list, look at what you something accomplished that day and feel good about it. Though it sounds super simple, taking pride in our accomplishments is not something most of us do. It can even seem a little bit silly at first. This isn’t about writing down things like: “I rule, I’m awesome, everyone can suck it. It’s a true reflection of a success you had that day. This helps to build your confidence and gives you momentum for the next work day. If you spend time making yourself a schedule, carefully carving time out of your day to spend with family or on a certain task, protect that time. This serves as a reminder of when to start and stop tasks. Yes, this means being firm with yourself and keeping your time commitments. It’s not enough to just take a mini-vacation here and there, and don’t even get me started on working vacations. You can’t make something a vacation if you attach the word “work” is attached to it. If you’ve decided to take time off let people at work know that they won’t be able to contact you. Stay true to your commitment to take time off. This also applies for when you leave work each day. Try to actually say goodbye to people, let them know you are done for the day. This is physical manifestation of ending your work day helps your mind let go of the day as well. Set a clear schedule, stick to that schedule, and if you can’t, amend that schedule. If you don’t respect your personal time, no one else has reason to either. I’ve been saying that I’m going to have a better work/life balance for years, but I’ve never done it. I just talk about it wistfully like it’s something I can look forward to in the future. Well, that’s stupid. There will always be more to do but overworking isn’t the solution. It just leaves you vulnerable in every other aspect of your life. Your health suffers, your personal relationships suffer, your sleep suffers, and then your work suffers. Your employers and co-workers know you are not a machine (at least I hope they do), they aren’t machines either. They too have families and friends and commitments outside of the workplace. It’s okay to take care of yourself and do things just for you. Yes, you can let it go at the end of each day but first, you have to give yourself permission. Saturday, April 19, 2014 - Karachi—Sindh assembly session on Friday was commenced almost on time with a delay of just 7 minutes but was adjourned after just 8 minutes due to lack of required quorum. Members of provincial assemblies from both the treasury and opposition benches had failed to report for the session despite the Speaker Agha Siraj Khan Durrani had rung warning bells for number of times. Only 6 MPAs were present in the House and then the Speaker had adjourned the session on 10:30 A.M till Monday. The Speaker while expressing his grief over the situation said that the MPAs used to complaint about commencement of the session of the House on Time but today they did not enter the House despite reminders through bell quite repeatedly. He had ironically advised the MPAs to donate their earning of the day in form of TA/DA allowance to welfare and charity trusts so that the poor could get the benefits of that earnings. On the other hand, Muttahidda Qaumi Movement had severely protested over the adjournment of the session of the House and leader of Opposition in the House, Syed Faisal Sabzwari addressed a press conference inside the Sindh assembly premise. He said that it was beyond senses to see the sessions was convened without quorum and was adjourned on the basis of quorum especially on an occasion when MQM wanted to seek explanation form Sindh government over the issue fo missing workers of MQM. It was clear that MQM was deliberately placed under such drastic actions of political grudges against it. He said that MQM leaders, office-bearers and workers were as much loyal citizens of Pakistan as were those sitting in big houses and travelling in luxury cars. He alleged Pakistan People’s Party of having an ill-intention against MQM’ workers missing and extra-judicial murders as MQM workers were being slaughtered out of court and 2 bodies of workers were also found being dumped in city. Once a favourite of investors amenable to living on the knife edge of risk and reward, emerging markets have been dragged down by their slowing economic growth. Many strategists suggest investors forget about emerging markets for now and instead put money in developed economies like the United States and Europe. Globe and Mail Update Feb. Another thought is to consider frontier markets, a subset of emerging markets with economies that are still in the rapid growth phase. Examples: Argentina, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Vietnam and the African nations of Kenya and Nigeria. “People are very excited about Africa,” said Gavin Graham, chief strategy officer at Integris Pension Management and co-author with Al Emid of Frontier Markets for Dummies. “It’s the new China. You’ve got demonstrable improvement in political and corporate governance, and you’re starting to see some fairly major growth in GDP. The possibilities there are very attractive. Mr. Graham describes frontier markets as being what major emerging markets such as Brazil, Russia, India and China – often grouped together as the BRIC nations – were 15 to 20 years ago. That is, fast-growing economies attracting a lot of foreign interest. These countries still have growing economies, but the momentum has faded. India’s economy grew last year by 4.4 per cent, compared to 9 per cent before the global economic crisis. China’s economy grew by 7.4 per cent in the first quarter of this year, down from a long-term average rate close to 10 per cent. It’s numbers like these that have prompted global investors to take profits in emerging markets over the past year or two. Oil-rich Nigeria is an example of both the risks and rewards of investing in frontier markets. After a revision of its economic data, the country recently moved ahead of South Africa as the African continent’s largest economy. The financial rating analysts at Moody’s say Nigeria’s economy will rank among the world’s 15 largest by 2050. These indicators of growing economic success have produced a 12-month gain of 21.2 per cent for the Nigerian Stock Exchange All Share Index. But Nigeria has also been battling a ruthless insurgency that threatens its economic growth. This week, 75 people were killed after an explosion at a bus station. A day later, gunmen killed a pair of guards at a school and kidnapped some 100 female students. Looking at the broad frontier market group of countries, Mr. Graham sees some demographic advantages that will help economic growth. Birth rates are coming down, the populations are skewed to a younger age than Western countries and work forces are expanding. “And, you’ve got lots of people moving from the country to the city, which is where you get the big, explosive growth that you saw in India, China and Southeast Asia. The dynamic growth of frontier markets explains why the MSCI Frontier Markets Index surged 25 per cent for the 12 months to April 15 in U.S. dollars, while the MSCI Emerging Markets Index fell 0.3 per cent. For the past three years, the frontier index averaged gains of 4.7 per cent and the emerging markets index fell 5.4 per cent annually. In terms of volatility, frontier markets will give you all you can handle. The MSCI Frontier Markets Index lost 54 per cent in 2008 and 18.4 per cent in 2011, but gained 72.7 per cent rise in 2005. The investment industry, with its innumerable emerging market funds, has been cautious with frontier market products. The one big name in the sector, the $82.4-million Templeton Frontier Markets Class, was closed to new investors in June, 2013, to help the company manage the flow of money going into frontier market stocks. The fund’s 19.4-per-cent return for the 12 months to March 31 was far better than the 2.8 per cent average for emerging market funds. The lack of mutual fund options means investors must look at exchange-traded fund options. The iShares MSCI Frontier 100 ETF (FM): Close to 60 per cent of the fund is in Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Qatar; the fees are high at 0.79 per cent. The Guggenheim Frontier Markets ETF (FRN): Fees at 0.7 per cent, and a weighting of roughly 70 per cent in Chile, Argentina and Colombia. The Global X Next Emerging & Frontier ETF (EMFM): Emerging markets like Malaysia, South Africa and Mexico take precedence over frontier markets like Vietnam, Pakistan and Nigeria; fees at 0.58 per cent. Mr. Graham suggests putting 5 to 10 per cent of your portfolio’s international exposure into frontier markets, and he thinks that reallocating this money from emerging market funds makes sense. This portfolio tweak isn’t just about reaching for higher returns. According to Mr. Graham, frontier markets are also an effective way to diversify your portfolio. Years back, one of the arguments in favour of holding emerging markets was that the stocks from these countries weren’t correlated with developed markets. Mr. Graham said frontier markets are now a better way than emerging markets to get some portfolio content that won’t rise and fall in the same way as Canadian, U.S. and other developed markets. His explanation: Because they’re less developed, frontier markets are more influenced by domestic events than global events. Mr. Graham expects frontier markets to produce the same returns over the decade ahead as emerging markets did in the past decade, which is about 7.5 per cent a year on average. They ride bikes, go skateboarding, run with their dad, play football and come home covered in mud. But they have another hobby too, one that’s currently shared by barely a dozen other boys in Britain. Jude and Jake enter beauty pageants. They usually win too. At home the shelves are stacked with heavy crowns covered in fake jewels, a trophy for Mr Personality and sashes for Mr Photogenic and Ultimate World Supreme King. In just one year they’ve won 20 crowns, four trophies and 65 sashes. Parents Sara and Graham Collins-Godden have to put them away in boxes to make space in their three-bedroom home in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex. Sara, 44, a former child performer and model who works in a community centre, says the secret of the boys’ success is their natural charm. Champions: Jake and Jude with big sister Ella “They both genuinely love being on the stage strutting their stuff with everyone cheering and clapping,” she says. “A lot of parents think it’s a bad thing. It might turn their son gay or whatever. But if being exposed to pageants or drama or dance or anything makes them into a fulfilled, happy adult, that’s fantastic. Whether they’re straight, gay, bisexual, whatever, I couldn’t care less as long as they’re happy. Jude says most of his school friends were “psyched” – excited –when he told them about the pageants, though a few still think it’s too girly. The brothers currently compete in the same events as girls. There are just five mainstream pageants that admit boys and only five to 10 currently enter. For the moment boys-only events don’t exist – but mum Sara is launching her own in May. Family pride: Sara and Graham with the kids “Unlike the girls, it’s not all about lip-gloss and fake lashes. she says. “Boys in a pageant don’t generally wear make-up or have false hairpieces, spray-tans or anything. They generally have a bit of powder and mascara to make them look less washed-out under bright lights. “It’s their eyes and smiles that win it for them. But they could be painting their fingernails for all I care. As long as they’re happy. The boys wear mini-tuxedos with waistcoats and bow-ties in the formal wear round and for fancy dress Jake has a pirate outfit and Jude is St George. Both know how to sashay down the stage before stopping for a pose. Sara says: “They don’t have any routines. They get out there and wing it. They blow kisses and wink. But it’s all down to them. Jake, in particular, absolutely loves it. It’s by no means a cheap hobby. Sara and Graham, 46, a tennis coach, pay £3,000 a year for entry fees and costumes as well as ferrying their kids to contests all over the country. She says: “We’re by no means well off. But if this is what the kids want to do, we’ll muster through. The boys got interested after seeing sister Ella, 13, take part. Pageants gave her a boost after she had been badly bullied. “The moment she walked on to the catwalk she lit up the room,” recalls Sara. “Her eyes were sparkling and her smile was beaming. She was genuinely happy for the first time in years. I looked at the boys and Jude had tears in his eyes. He said, ‘Ella’s happy again’. “That was it for me – I was completely sold. After that both he and Jake wanted to give it a go, too. She knows there may be a time when her sons don’t want to take part. But they have raised £1,500 for charity and both are signed up to a talent agency. Jake has modelled for a children’s magazine and Jude has auditioned for two feature films. So does their dad like their hobby? “It makes me really proud,” says Graham. “They surprise me with how much confidence they have. I can tell they’re going to be confident for the rest of their lives. If the boys want to do pageants it’s up to them. Sara’s own pageant next month will be called Boys to Men. She says: “It will be about boys being boys,” she says. “It will not be a beauty contest – it’s all about their personality and self confidence. You've turned off story recommendations. Titled 'The Best Seller', the film will be first screened at the Goa fest and then at other international film festivals. "It's a dark film. It's a realistic fiction. It traces the journey of two sisters - Anu and Ayesha -- brought up in a brothel. In a bigger canvas, the film deals with the psychology of sex workers," explained Maitra. Advertise with the Herald. The American mentality seems to be that more is always better. Faster, smaller and stronger technology comes out every day. However, studies now suggest less is more in a very surprising area: running. While moderate running helps lower risk for many health-related illnesses such as diabetes and other weight-related issues, long-term marathon style training increases plaque buildup in the heart. The strain marathon running causes can create permanent heart damage leading to heart attack or other congestive heart failures. Not only that, but long-distance running can exacerbate or damage your knees due to the pressure and strain put on them for running. Long-distance running seems to be a more perilous than beneficial pastime, especially as you age. That being said, only 1 in every 184,000 marathoners has a heart attack directly after a marathon. Any marathoner or dedicated runner can tell you running is a demanding sport and the strain on organs and joints is real. This study isn’t trying to convince people to give up running. It’s advocating for moderation, which is a majorly overlooked component in living a healthy lifestyle. Lessons in moderation are especially important in the state of Wisconsin. According to the United Health Foundation, 29.7 percent of adults in the state of Wisconsin are obese. We have the 20th highest rate in the country. People can gain excess amounts of weight for a variety of reasons. Food fulfills so many cultural, social, and emotional needs for people that I do not want to trivialize the battle many people face with weight loss and weight gain. In a state famous for thick brats, squeaky curds and copious amounts of beer, a lesson in moderation is something we can all benefit from. All it takes is small steps to begin to make improvements. For one, portion sizes. Americans have some of the biggest portion sizes in the world. By just taking one less scoop of noodles or shake of cereal anyone can take steps to live a more moderate life. Keep in mind that the food pyramid is outdated, and ChooseMyPlate.gov is an excellent and modernized tool to learn more about portion size and division. Living a life of moderation can be a very big undertaking. In fact, living a healthy lifestyle is a huge balancing act between many elements, not just diet and exercise. Health can be emotional, mental and spiritual. As high-stress as college life can be, it is important we find ourselves an area of healthy moderation. Even more emphatically, albeit from three years ago, a 2011 Infobae poll found almost 64 percent favoured Carlitos over Messi. The pressure is not confined to cyberspace. In Argentina's last friendly match, a disappointing draw against Romania in Bucharest, the banner shown above flew from one of the stadium's balconies. "Sabella, Tevez is Argentine," reads the simple message, an exhortation for the coach to stop the madness and include the People's Player in his rightful position. None of this should suggest that Sabella is making the wrong decision. He is a capable, thoughtful coach who would not discard players on a whim, let alone those with the talent of Tevez. If he is not convinced by the Juventus man or worried about his effect on the team, he should not be swayed; as arguably happened with predecessor Sergio Batista, eventually cajoled into including Tevez in his 2011 Copa America plans to disastrous consequences. But the coach's choice, right or wrong, adds an extra level of pressure to the Albiceleste as they chase the World Cup in the backyard of their arch football rivals. If they go on to win the tournament, or at the very least make the semi-final stages, the absence of Carlitos may just pass unnoticed. The Friday closure came during work to install a new Boise city sewer line: Excavation by Schmidt Construction Company ran into an unexpected problem and damaged a portion of the pathway, according to a county news release."The Greenbelt is now closed at Shakespeare Way, and is expected to remain closed for a period of potentially two weeks or more while crews work to address and repair the problem," the county reported.Greenbelt users can still access portions of the pathway east and west of the Highway 21 Bridge and Diversion Dam, but there will be no through traffic allowed on the Greenbelt in either direction in the area of North Shakespeare Way until the sewer line issue is resolved.Updates on this closure will be posted on the www.adacounty.id.gov website. Rob Kardashian enters rehab. The autopsy results on Peaches Geldof are in, and they say….. Debbie Gibson took to her official website to announce that she has Lyme Disease. When Debbie Gibson flew to Chile for two sold-out shows, she had a great idea: she would share concert photos and videos on her blog, thinking it was the best way to interact with her fans. But the reaction wasn’t exactly what she had hoped. The usually slender Gibson had lost even more weight, causing fans to taunt her skeletal appearance online. “Some were just plain mean and ignorant,” she says. The response inspired Gibson to come clean about a health challenge she has been facing. I feel compelled to address a health related issue I have been dealing with. Last year, I was diagnosed with Lyme disease. It is an elusive disease that disguises itself as many other things and creates a lot of pain and discomfort along the way. At the start of 2013, I spent time both on the West and East Coast followed by travel overseas. I am not exactly sure when or where I picked it up, but, in the early spring, I began to show unusual symptoms. A lot of Lyme symptoms mimic symptoms of anxiety and stress. Friends kept saying, “Well, it’s only natural that you are a bit anxious!” I was about to start taping a network TV Show. The first symptoms came in the form of food sensitivities. I found I could not touch sugar, starch, caffeine, certain oils, etc., without having a severe reaction that felt like jolts of electricity running through my body. I felt like a live wire. I started getting nerve pain and muscle fatigue in a way I never before had. My back would light up with fiery pain as cameras rolled. Every chance I got I would close my dressing room door and meditate or do some form of guided relations. I was extremely fatigued. I thought “Do I have mono or something?!?” I got tested for everything under the sun, though it did not occur to me, or my West Coast doctors, to test for Lyme. It is typically an East Coast thing. After taping the first episode of the ABC show “Sing Your Face Off,” my back went out. I knew I had Gay Pride concerts to do in the NY area about 10 days later. I just kept resting and meditating and eating a ton of protein and fat to try to keep weight on… egg yolks, red meat, you name it! But the weight kept failing off and I had a gaunt and “spinewy” look and felt extremely fragile as well as emotional and depressed. I could barely walk. I started feeling numbness and tingling in my hands and feet, which is very disconcerting for a pianist and dancer to say the least. Night sweats, chills, fever, nerve tremors, nightmares, and migraine headaches were at a fever pitch without a minute of relief. Lifted by the love of my hometown crowd, Long Island Pride rocked! Though, after the show, a fan jokingly commented, “Get this girl a burger.” I took that fan’s advice and forced down a burger. It got me through the next show. During the next several months, I would continue to cycle in and out of this flu like state and my doctors, unable to see me in person due to my touring schedule, would deduce by phone I had H Pylori or maybe an upper respiratory infection. I was put on Z paks, Amoxicillin and Dixilant. These combos of meds made me feel considerably better. But I would only stay on a typical 10-day course. With Lyme, it takes cocktails of numerous meds for long stints to truly cure it as well as all its co-infections. The symptoms would be staved off for a few weeks then return. I kept performing and filming through the discomfort. I refused to be a “patient” or a “victim.” Though I still had not gotten to the bottom of what was going on, I kept saying to myself, “this is temporary,” as I felt like I was disappearing. I lacked vital energy… a shell of myself. Somewhere along the way, my body could no longer tolerate the amount of fat I was eating. If there is any doubt that starch and sugar and grains is what keeps weight on, I had confirmation. At times, my boyfriend would insist I eat some pasta and butter, even though I did not feel great doing it.”You need to gain weight,” he would say. My spine was frail and unprotected. He was right. So, when I had a few days to deal with the discomfort, I would purposely eat things that would “stick to my ribs” so to speak. But, the fat consumption began to affect my gall bladder. Or, maybe there was a GB co­infection, due to the Lyme. I found myself, moments from going on stage with bands and symphonies around the country, in nearly debilitating stabbing pain. It was hard to breathe, let alone sing. In a last ditch effort, before going to a hospital to potentially get it removed, I did a very intense cleanse. WOW. It was life altering. I will spare you the details, but let’s just say… it worked! I felt such tremendous relief. But, the symptoms returned. I was not absorbing water properly and could not drink enough of it to stay hydrated. Because of this, my appearance was pretty harsh. I was self conscious about the deep lines on my forehead. I got a call right at that moment to do a cameo in the 3rd “Mega Shark” installment. I hated the thought of appearing on camera looking so gaunt and depleted. I went to a dermatologist to see about a peel or any treatment that may help cover the lines and signs of whatever was going on, and she suggested Botox. Just as casually as you say, “pass the salt.” I usually do tons of research and due diligence before undergoing any treatment, but, in a knee jerk reaction, I said, “Yeah, let’s do it.” I completely forgot there is a word TOX in BOTOX. It is a POISON. With Lyme still undiagnosed, both the trauma of the needles and the toxin itself wreaked absolute havoc on my physical and mental state. I will NEVER put this or any other toxin into my body for vanity reasons EVER again. I hope anyone out there considering this approach takes this as a precaution. Some never have any reaction, but on the other end of the spectrum is my experience. Five days after the treatment, I was texting my boyfriend and he noticed I was mixing up my words. I had trouble with directions and driving. I was terrified. This was like pouring gasoline on an already lit fire. The tremors intensified and now I had tingling and pain in my head, along with migraines. I had no idea my immune system was so compromised to begin with, and now this. I learned a very big lesson… the hard way. Eventually, I sought more medical care. So many of my doctors throughout my lifetime were of the more natural realm or ENT docs for my voice. My boyfriend, Dr. Rutledge, is always there to advise, as I received outside medical care. It was time to broaden my reach beyond just voice doctors and energy work practitioners, who helped me through much of the year. A wonderful practitioner named Dr. James Stoxen did a lot of work with me on improving my circulation in an attempt to help the body heal itself. It helped me get through some intense appearances, performances in sub zero temperatures, and the holiday parade in Chicago. I am so thankful to have had care and support, while looking for the underlying cause. I thought at one point the issues were hormonal and an OBGYN performed, what would later be found to be an unnecessary procedure, which would cause the worst Lyme flare to date. I had just started to rebuild a bit through proper eating and rest, and this trauma set me back light years. My niece Diana brought me water and soup in NYC after this horrendous event, as I could not get out of bed. I decided to pull the plug on all work and would stop at nothing to figure this thing out, once and for all. My back doctor, Dr. Gabriel Hunt, referred me to Dr. John Eneyati (Century Wellness). He ran some tests, which led him to refer me to GI doc, Dr. Rahbar (LA Integrative GI). He first discovered SIBO and immune deficiencies and tested me for Lyme. You could have knocked me over with a feather when I tested positive for Lyme. Western Blot and all the rest that followed… positive, positive, positive. To clear my head, I went for a bike ride with Rutledge. I broke down in tears – “I don’t have the strength for this… a simple bike ride. In looking back and wracking my brain, yes, I did indeed have a few bug bites in the spring. Who doesn’t? Especially if you play in outdoor parks with nieces and nephews. It’s par for the course! It even made me think, “Maybe this has been going on for years.” It apparently is chronic and lays dormant in people for decades. I was referred to Lyme Literate Doctor, Specialist Dr. Joseph Sciabarassi. I remember sitting in his office, despondent. “I am in here somewhere,” I said through tears. By this point, my cognitive thinking had been affected… my sense of direction, sleep, moods, stamina, muscles and joints. And, I had this sunken in look and dark circles under my eyes. All the times you saw me on Vine, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or YouTube laughing and singing, I used concealer to cover that up and pulled from my reserves to bring you my best. The doc and his staff gave me Vitamin IV drips, daily. I lived in that office. Dr. Joe performed acupuncture on me, himself, to help alleviate the back pain. I told a select group of people what I was going through. They showed tremendous support. I went on an intense regime of antibiotics and other medications to wipe out the Lyme. Ironically, it was wiping ME out as well!!!! It was as if I had a personality transplant. There was a plateau moment were the meds were helping. The regime definitely got me a over a major hurdle. I sat at the piano for hours… something I had been unable to do for quite some time. Certain cognitive symptoms were getting better. The nerve tremors, which were like somebody running an electric current through my nerves shaking me awake from the inside out, were a thing of the past. It was time to head to South America to perform. I was still dealing with terrible back pain and instabilities and the weight continued to roll off. I was painfully aware of my appearance. I am an advocate of being lean and healthy and toned. Not skeletal. Amidst the posts online celebrating the wonderful concerts in Santiago, I would come across comments about my weight and appearance. Some were just plain mean and ignorant. I want to urge you all… NEVER JUDGE… ANYONE! You never know what someone is going through. These comments hurt the people writing them… not me. I am still in this process and undergoing treatment. But, beyond just “glimmers of hope,” I actually feel like “ME” again. These last round of shows have been therapeutic and uplifting. We all face challenges and I am learning much from the ones I am facing. Keep rockin’ through whatever adversity is presenting it self. We all face challenges. Let it flow on through. More Reports"Inside the DoD's Reporter's Notebook" is biweekly feature focused on news about the Defense Department and defense community as gathered by Federal News Radio DoD Reporter Jared Serbu. In this space two weeks ago, we told you about a Defense Department decision with regard to the General Services Administration's schedules program that's raised a lot of eyebrows among vendors. To recap: DoD issued a "class deviation" from the existing language of the Federal Acquisition Regulation, removing a shortcut that used to let contracting officers make purchases of $3,000 or less without making their own determinations about whether or not the price was reasonable. The presumption, up until now, has been that since GSA has already negotiated prices at the contract level, it's not necessary for agency customers to repeat their work when they place an individual order. Schedule holders are not happy. In part, they worry that adding any layer of bureaucracy to the purchases could drive business to other vehicles and make the entire Federal Supply Schedules program less relevant. In the time since we wrote that original piece, Dick Ginman, DoD's director of procurement and acquisition policy sat down with me at the Pentagon to explain his rationale for the change. Ginman told me he decided the move was necessary because he kept hearing from instructors in DoD's acquisition schoolhouses that whenever they admonished students to seek discounts from vendors, the students would point to the section of the FAR in question and argue that they didn't need to concern themselves with pricing — GSA had already taken care of that. "'I got that I'm encouraged to ask for discounts, but if I'm busy and overloaded, and it says I don't need to it, then I can fall back on the FAR,'" as Ginman paraphrased the line of thinking. "Well, they do need to do it. What I wanted was that sentence taken out. I expect you to determine the price is fair and reasonable, other than, 'Here's the catalog price, just take it.'" Ginman says he believes that's exactly what's been happening — contracting officers have been buying the first item they spot on the schedules that meets their needs, without comparing prices. "The price range on the schedules can be 70, 80, 90, 200 percent. The day after I issued this, we got an unsolicited email giving an example of a stapler, and the same nationally stock numbered item is listed on the schedule at $11 and $31," he said. "I gotta tell you, I really don't want to pay $31 for the same stapler I could buy for $11. A lot of what we buy is just standard everyday commercial items. At the end of the day, we buy 3.5 million actions worth of this stuff a year, and it adds up. We're in an arena with decreasing budgets, and I'd really like people to think about cost. Ginman said he'd be fine with leaving the existing language alone if DoD's buyers were paying attention to another line in that same FAR clause, which reads: "Although GSA has already negotiated fair and reasonable pricing, ordering activities may seek additional discounts before placing an order." But he insists that too many of them haven't been, so he says he's supportive of the FAR council making the same change he did — only governmentwide. He also made it clear he believes vendors' concerns about the change are unfounded. "I don't think I'm asking people to do a lot of work. I'm asking them to use their head," he said. "How hard is it, when you're on the Internet and you're looking at a stapler to get a second price? Ten seconds? It's not like I'm telling people to go do another 20 hours of work for this $3 or $4 item. Just pay attention to what you're doing. And Ginman also pushed back against the notion that his action would have a detrimental effect on the schedules program. "I'm still going to buy it from the schedules, I'm just going to buy it for $11 instead of $31. If the person who has it listed at $31 really wants to sell on the schedules, maybe they ought to change their price to be competitive with someone else. The National Geospatial Intelligence Agency says it's the first member of the U.S. intelligence community to join GitHub, the hugely-popular open source software repository and collaboration site. For now, NGA's contributions to the open source community are pretty sparse. It's released only one software package so far: a geographic data tasking system called GeoQ that's designed to run inside a virtual machine. NGA was able to release the source code because it owns the data rights to the package after having developed it in-house with help from the Mitre Corporation and FEMA. "It enables us along with our first responders to merge multiple sources of imagery, whether it's commercial, handheld, news broadcasts, and do it very quickly," Letitia Long, NGA's director said at this week's annual GEOINT conference in Tampa, Fla. "After having put this on GitHub, I'm sure it's going to become better every single day. I think it's a great example of how we can be innovative. Other federal agencies have taken the step of emancipating their custom-made software into the wild, and for similar reasons. The most notable example may be the Department of Veterans Affairs, which released the code to its entire electronic health record system, VistA, with the explicit purpose of enlisting outside talent to help modernize the system. Speaking of geospatial data, another tidbit of news from this week's GEOINT conference: the intelligence community thinks it's time to relax the federal rules that ban satellite imagery companies from selling their ultra-high quality images in the commercial marketplace. The announcement by James Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence, comes a few months after the Senate included language in the intelligence community's annual authorization bill that urged the IC to loosen the rules, which were in place to keep a wide margin between the imagery available to intelligence agencies and what potential adversaries have access to. Under the current rules, only the government can buy imagery that's better than 0.5 meter resolution, meaning every pixel in the image represents half a meter on the ground. Last year, Digital Globe asked regulators for permission to begin selling images that are twice as accurate: up to 0.25 meter resolution, but Clapper didn't specify how far the IC's recommendation would go. When DoD first rolled out the Secure Mobile Environment-Personal Electronic Device (SME-PED) six years ago, it was a pretty big deal. For the first time, senior officials could access secret-level networks from just about anywhere, and the custom-made SME-PED has been DoD's only widely-deployed mobile device for classified communications ever since. But the venerable SME-PED has lost its luster, because, well, it's a 2008-era handheld: while the rest of the world has moved on to 4G data rates, the SME-PED is tied to 2G technology. And it costs upward of $3,000 per unit (plus an extra $100 if you want a car charger), not including wireless service. The device will reach its scheduled end of life this year, and as Navy CIO Terry Halvorsen pointed out in a recent memo, the military services are expecting the Defense Information Systems Agency to start a large-scale rollout of a new breed of handhelds. A secure version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is already approved for secret-level data under the Defense Mobile Classified Capability program, and DISA expects to start deploying the devices in the coming months. DISA's also using the Motorola 4G Razr Maxx for top-secret communications in a new pilot program, but only for voice calls. Eventually, the military services will take over responsibility for buying their own classified devices, but for now, DISA is handling procurement and everything else in a sort of mobility-as-a-service model. It's Defense customers will pay about $137 per month, per device. The charge includes the device itself, the wireless service plan and all support.
